Named after the ancient pine-forested mountains that mirror themselves in the still waters of Nigeen Lake — a view you will see every morning, from your bed.
The Zabarwan Room at Shahenshah Heritage Houseboat is named after the ancient Zabarwan Range — the pine-clad hills that rise above Srinagar and cast their perfect reflection into Nigeen Lake each morning. It is a name that carries the weight and stillness of those mountains, and staying in this room, you will understand why.
Step inside and the world outside becomes a painting. Every surface in the Zabarwan Room tells a story of Kashmir's legendary woodcarving tradition — the ceiling is panelled in intricately hand-carved deodar cedar, each medallion and geometric motif shaped by artisans whose families have practised this craft for generations. The walls are dressed in warm walnut-toned timber, the floor softened by an authentic Kashmiri hand-knotted carpet whose deep-red and blue patterns echo the valley's ancient weaving vocabulary.
The room's double bed is dressed in crisp, cloud-soft linens embroidered with Kashmiri Sozni needlework — the same fine embroidery found on the valley's most prized pashmina shawls. Heavy cotton curtains frame the lake-facing window, and when you draw them open in the morning, what greets you is not a wall or a rooftop but the entire expanse of Nigeen Lake, the sky reflected in it, and beyond it, the blue silhouette of the Zabarwan hills for which your room is named.
The attached bathroom is spotless and well-appointed, with 24-hour hot water — a comfort you will especially appreciate on crisp Kashmir mornings and cold winter nights. A wall heater and electric blanket ensure the room stays warm through even the coldest months, while a ceiling fan keeps it perfectly cool through the long, golden Kashmir summer.
Mornings here begin with Kahwa — our complimentary welcome tea of green leaves, saffron threads, crushed cardamom, cinnamon, and sliced almonds, served steaming at your window as the lake wakes up around you. Through the glass you will watch the first Shikaras glide out from the bank, the birdcalls begin to layer over the silence, and the Zabarwan hills catch the first light of day. It is a morning ritual that guests return to Shahenshah year after year to experience again.
The Zabarwan Room is one of four identical lake-facing rooms aboard Shahenshah Heritage Houseboat — each bearing a name from Kashmir's natural world, each offering the same quality of carving, the same lake view, and the same warmth of family hospitality that has made Shahenshah one of Nigeen Lake's most loved houseboats.
